Deformation of PST crystals of Ti46A18Nb and Ti46A18Ta

Abstract

The mechanisms of deformation in the gamma and alpha2 phases in PST crystals of Ti46A18Nb and of Ti46A18Ta (at%), which have been deformed in compression, have been investigated using TEM and EBSD. The crystals examined so far were not all perfectly aligned along [0001]α2 which led to lower flow stresses than would be expected for perfectly aligned [0001]α2 crystals because most of the strain could be relieved by slip in lamellae in soft orientations. It has been found that the deformation in the gamma in both the Ta and Nb-containing alloys was dominated by twinning which activated α-component slip in the alpha2 in grains where [0001]α2 was inclined to the stress axis. Virtually no slip has been observed in alpha2 grains, even when the stress axis was close to [0001]α2.
