Abstract
Cities are the main consumers of resources (water, energy, food, raw materials) depending on these for its functioning and its urban population survival. Endless expansion of cities in the world, specially in developing countries, had blurred the boundaries between rural-urban areas, affecting the agricultural production that is vital for the sustain of billions or urban inhabitants in world cities. Therefore, many cities in the world have been looking for ways to be more self-sustainable, generating energy, water and food for its subsistence. This article explore the processes behind the current threats in food security, and present some of the adaptation strategies of cities and urban communities to improve food security and environmental sustainability through urban agriculture in different scales and approaches, and the waste management strategies associated with food production and solid waste recycling.
