Abstract
This is a film music work for Dark Water, directed by Erin Coates and Anna Nazzari. Drawing on their combined research into cephalopod anatomy, maritime history, ocean mythologies, psychogenesis and the experience of deep-sea divers, the music makes a contribution to film music through new ways to engage psychological thresholds to delineate the limits of the human body in relation to oceanic environments. This is done by emulating human subaquatic sensations as a compositional tool. The music composition asks what are the ways human emotional and oceanic habitat loss can be intertwined and expressed within in music in the genre of Australian Gothic cinema?
