Abstract

Researcher, author, advisor and consultant, Ms Dalia Mogahed is probably less known than other great Muslim leaders, but her presence is becoming more prominent and her influence equally significant. This chapter presents the remarkable life achievements of Dalia and how her leadership vision, style and approach, can foreground principles of social justice values in education. Her commitment to establishing and enacting faith-based approaches to solve persistent social problems in her native America suggests a strong social justice orientation to her work. Her voice on matters relevant for American Muslims, such as racism and Islamophobia, invoke a commitment to the cultivation of democratic citizenship. Her research on social policy has been used to advise presidential matters on social problems. In this chapter, key moments in Dalia Mogahed leadership activism are presented as educative opportunities to foreground principles of social justice in school curricula program development. Examples of specific lessons are presented to demonstrate how rich, integrative learning about social justice, equity, critical thinking and democracy can be planned and delivered. Great leaders have an acute and solid understanding of how their emotions and actions affect the people around them. Great teachers use emotional intelligence to relate with their students. Educative lessons in this chapter capitalise on the emotional investment Dalia Mogahed makes to her work every day and how one person’s endeavours can become successful lessons about self and others.
