Abstract

This chapter maps sociological conceptualisations of gender, moving from the sex binary to gender roles and beyond. We begin by considering the differing perspectives of positivists, social constructionists, and poststructuralists, and highlighting the importance of positionality, location, and cultural context. Shifting focus to bodies and identities, we then outline sociological thinking surrounding femininities, masculinities and identities beyond the binary, defining cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary as well as concepts such as transnormativity. We conclude the chapter with a consideration of power, briefly exploring notions of patriarchy, materialist feminism, Black feminism, and post-colonial and decolonial feminism.
