Abstract

This paper outlines and presents optimization strategies and computer flow charts for rough drilling operations on NC/CNC and conventional machine tools. The optimization analysis is based on the minimum production time per component and incorporate various technological constraints of importance in rough drilling. The optimization strategies for this simple operation have been found to be intricate, requiring computer assistance to arrive at the final optimum cutting conditions. The strategies are more comprehensive than those previously reported in the literature and highlight the effects of constraints and machining performance data. A brief comparison of handbook recommended and optimal solutions has shown considerable production time advantage of the latter.
