Abstract
In this paper two new TBM performance prediction models of Gong and Zhao (2009) and Hassanpour et al. (2011), which have been developed by the referenced authors in two separate studies in Iran and Singapore, are introduced and compared. These models have some similarities in developing method and input and output parameters. Both models propose simple equations for predicting Field Penetration Index or FPI (kN/cutter/mm/rev) based on basic rock mass parameters like UCS, RQD, Jv, brittleness index and a (angle between tunnel axis and discontinuity plane). Results of the comparisons show that output parameters obtained from these two models coincide and they can be merged to develop a more comprehensive model with wider application.
