Comorbidity between substance use disorders and other psychiatric illnesses is common and severely impairs functional and treatment outcomes. Many theories attempt to explain the high rate of co-occurrence; however, none is fully satisfactory. Stress precipitates and exacerbates each set of disorders and may function as a mediating mechanism between them. © 2007
