Abstract
The strengthening model by Li and Wawner for Al alloys with {111}α precipitate plates observing the shearing of the omega (AlCu) phase in plastically-deformed samples is demonstrated to be inevitably incorrect. The model was based on the interfaces between dislocations and {111}α precipitate plates of Ω phase in AlCuMgAg alloy using the conventional and high resolution TEM. Since the Ω phase is structurally distinguishable from the phase θ, it is possible that the deformation of the Ω phase will be different from that of the θ phase. Therefore, a discrepancy is evident between the claimed [001](110)Ω slip system and the apparent {001}(100)Ω slip system ignoring the plate-like form and the effect of the aspect ratio for the strengthening.
