Abstract
Hydrocarbon liquids produced in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and related catalytic processes are often complex mixtures of straight-chain, branched and cyclic alkanes and alkenes, together with hydroaromatic, fully aromatic and oxygenated compounds. In spite of the analytical power of conventional electron impact gas chromatography mass spectrometry (EI-GC-MS), the detailed characterization of such liquids can be tedious or even impossible due to the multitude of chemical, structural and geometrical isomers which must be distinguished. Structural elucidation of individual components can be considerably aided by the use of on-line chemical reactions which are selective for a particular functional group or in some other way provide specific structural information. Such reactions can be carried out in a specially designed microreactor situated between the gas chromatograph and the mass spectrometer ion source, or within the ion source itself.
