Abstract
Aldo Zargani (1933-), who lived the anti-Semitic persecution in Piedmont from 1938 to 1945, is the author of two autobiographical books, Per violino solo (1995), Certe promesse d'amore (1997) and various short stories and essays, some of which are collected in the book In bilico (2017). In these writings, memory is always connected to the present: memories emerge through associations of ideas produced by visual or auditory stimuli. The autobiographical ego shows how its present is constantly influenced by the past, in the concern that the meanings of the past are destined to fade and in the many ironic and self-deprecating moments in which past hopes and illusions are commented with the "hindsight" of the following private and public experiences.
