Abstract

Outbreaks of waterborne disease provide ample evidence of the capacity of waterborne pathogens to cause illness in consumers of contaminated drinking water. Such events can have severe health effects and major economic impacts on an individual community; however, they are quite rare in comparison to the large number of water supplies that operate without apparent health problems.
