Abstract
Bologna's centre has been the setting of several fictional investigations, following
a pattern in European crime fiction which is tied to the image of a centred city.
Carlo Lucarelli is the first Italian crime writer to deliver an image of Bologna
as a megalopolis. His novels also show how crime fiction can maintain its
epistemological function in the post-industrial era, tying the work of the
detective to the use of modern technologies. By providing an original version
of the urban sprawl, and bringing forward subsequent urban studies on the area,
Lucarelli's crime fiction also reinforces the genre's special relation with the urban
environment.
