Abstract

This volume results from the third national symposium on the biology of Phascolarctos cinereus held at the University of Melbourne in February 1988. It consists of 31 papers covering a comprehensive range of topics including: a reassessment of the phylogenetic affinities of the koala; several contributions reviewing the dynamics and status of natural populations; the current knowledge of diet; a review of digestion and in particular the digestive function in hind gut fermenters; a description of the social system in natural populations of koalas; new information of endocrine control of reproduction; several papers on aspects of Chlamydia infection of koalas; experimental translocation; and three papers on management of koalas.
