Abstract

Marine benthic macroalgae (seaweeds) and microalgae were first recorded from Arctic adn Antarctic regions in the first half of the 19th century. Most early studies were taxonomic and biogeographical, and hte majority concentrated on the most conspicuous forms, the seaweeds.
