Abstract
We examined the effect of pravastatin on cardiovascular outcomes in 3,514 patients ages 65 to 75 years with average cholesterol levels and previous acute coronary syndromes. The relative benefits were similar in these patients and those ages 31 to 64 years. The absolute benefit was greater and the numbers needed to treat to provide benefits were lower in older than in younger patients. Our data suggest pravastatin therapy is appropriate for older patients with previous myocardial infarctions or unstable angina and cholesterol levels of 155 to 271 mg/dL.
