Back radiation suppression of aperture coupled microstrip antennas using photonic bandgap back shield

Abstract

Design and experimental results of a dual-aperture coupled rectangular microstrip patch antenna element, suitable for portable VSAT terminals, are presented. The dual-band dual-polarised antenna element achieves 21% input impedance bandwidth at S- and C-bands. A PBG back shield is implemented to improve the antennas F/B radiation level by about 30 dB.
