Abstract

There are numerous toxic substances that human beings can be exposed to accidentally or deliberately. These include carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, and numerous hydrocarbons and solvents such as methanol to more complex molecules derived from animal or plant origin. Plant derived toxic substances include nicotine and other alkaloids such as atropine, hyoscine, as well as more complex molecules such as those found in ricin and plants containing digoxin and related glycosides. Animal-based toxins are also numerous and include tetrodotoxin and various peptidic substances found in various species many of which are found in venoms.
