note = "In collaboration with Hiroshi Nakao this design responds to the competition brief for a small and compact artist studio which could become a gallery in Niigata prefecture, a part of Japan which receives very high winter snow fall. With reference to traditional rural structures of both Japan and Australia a skeletal structure was developed that could be occupied through spaces of different levels of enclosure. The high variability between summer and winter modes and the overlaps between making living and exhibiting drove the thinking of the way in which the building works and operates. External insulating curtains from cold-climate cattle sheds were proposed as a perimeter skin.",
