Abstract
This chapter discusses a number of attempts by anti-Zionists to suppress my support for Israel’s existence and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One example involved a personal attack within the Australasian Middle East Studies Association (AMESA). Another involved a slanderous letter written to my Head of Department by an anti-Zionist academic complaining about my views. A third involved a personal attack in the academic journal Overland, and a subsequent apologia for that attack by the editor of that journal and a Jewish Left group.
The aim of such attacks appears to be to exclude the presence of any pro-Israel views within public debates (particularly on the liberal/left of the spectrum) so that pro-Palestinian views win the debate by default. Equally, it appears that the pro-Palestinian cause in Australia and elsewhere has been hijacked by particularly aggressive and intolerant forms of advocacy.
