Abstract
This article explores the cultural politics of apathy, contrasting it with enthusiasm and fanaticism within the context of a special issue on "Evil." Apathy, increasingly prevalent and often seen as a lack of engagement, stems from political alienation, economic disempowerment, and media portrayals of suffering. The authors examine how the current economic system contributes to a sense of powerlessness and futility, critiquing the 'reaction economy' where emotional engagement is commodified. They propose that apathy can be understood as a form of resistance to hyperactive capitalism, potentially containing seeds for new beginnings. While acknowledging challenges posed by predictive modelling and the seeming inevitability of current economic systems, the article emphasizes the necessity of hope and action in combating apathy. This analysis contributes to broader discussions on apathy's role in contemporary society.
