Abstract

The language-symbolic relevance of aliases in a selection of contemporary picaresque novels is investigated here in the light of Lotman-Uspensky's and Wittgenstein's theories. These reflections will show how nicknames are not simple narrative artifices, but disclose a distinct outlook on the world in which pure nominalization of objects and phenomena surrenders to metadescription, synonymy and the contingency of meaning.
