Abstract

Polarographic measurements on acidic solutions of Bi(III) and fluoride have indicated the existence of the species: BiF2+, BiF+2 and BiF3, with stability constants (at ionic strength of 2.0 and at 30°C) of 26, 2 and 500, respectively, for the reaction: Bi3++nHF⇌BiF(3-n)+n + nH+. Results have been interpreted on the basis of change in half-wave potential with change in fluoride concentration and under conditions in which reversible reduction of Bi(III) was found to occur.
