An analysis of injury severity trends in Transport Accident Commission claims: 2000-2004

Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned ReportResearch

Abstract

A prior study investigating serious casualty trends from 2000 to 2003 found that while a considerable reduction in the number of fatalities had occurred in 2003 when compared to previous years, seriously injured casualties experienced only a relatively minor reduction. An analysis of the TAC claims data at the time appeared to confirm a shift towards a reduction in severity. As more comprehensive data has become available, it was desirable to repeat the study with the aim of producing more definitive results. This current study had three objectives. It sought to investigate the quality of the TAC claims data, examine the trends in injury severity over the period 2000 to 2004 and, to compare the performance of two injury severity measures, ISS and ICISS.
