Abstract

Based on studies centered around intertextuality in Classical Studies, drawing from scholars such as A. Barchiesi (2010), G. B. Conte (2010), D. Fowler, and P. S. Vasconcellos (2001; 2011), this paper aims to discuss the impact of allusions in Latin poetry in its translation to Portuguese. To this end, it is presented a study of an excerpt of Ovid’s Ars Amatoria in which the poet alludes to one of his own elegies, Amores III, 2. I shall argue that the recalling of his own elegy in the Ars Amatoria serves the purpose of building the poet’s persona engaged in teaching the arts of Love, and that given its importance to the poem it is crucial that a translation of the passage takes this into account. In the last section of the paper, I discuss some challenges that such a translation should incur, offering in the sequence my own solution to the matter.
