Abstract

Algorand is a blockchain-based cryptocurrency whose native token is called ALGO. The consensus protocol of Algorand is based on a Byzantine agreement protocol where each round of the protocol consists of several steps and each step is executed by a subset of users. Algorand is a proof-of-stake blockchain meaning that the number of ALGO tokens in each user’s account determines the probability that the user is selected to take part in each step of the protocol. This chapter presents the main components of the Algorand protocol as well as the main use cases of the Algorand blockchain.
