Abstract

How can people over the age of 64 who are left behind after suicide be best supported and helped? A research project on the way.
People over the age of 64 do not get enough help when they lose a loved one to suicide. There is a need to develop practical, health-promoting interventions that increase the psychosocial opportunities for action for professionals, the bereaved and their relatives. This article describes an action research project in which people over the age of 64 left behind after suicide, their relatives, professional experts, professionals and researchers collaborate to design and implement the project, which consists of three coherent sub-studies: The first sub-study is a qualitative interview study. The purpose is to create knowledge about the need for support among survivors over the age of 64. The second sub-study is the development, testing and evaluation of psychosocial interventions selected on the basis of the results from the first sub-study. The third sub-study is a study of the collaborative processes in action research. The result of the project will be the formulation of guidelines for how people over the age of 64 who are left behind after suicide are best supported and helped. The goal is that professionals can easily apply this knowledge in their practice.
