Abstract
Focus: AI Learning Circle: Professional Learning for Changing Academic Practices
Background/Context: AI's rapid educational impact necessitates structured support. Our institution launched the AI Learning Circle in 2023, a professional learning initiative equipping educators with AI integration knowledge and guidance, addressing the gap between AI potential and practice (Chan, 2023).
Description: The AI Learning Circle is a collaborative community of practice supporting staff in integrating AI into teaching and assessment. Through peer learning, participants co-develop resources, guidelines, and examples on AI tool selection, pedagogy, and assessment.
Method: The Circle followed a three-phase iterative process, evolving with staff and student needs. Stage 1 focused on AI tool evaluation and secure assessment design. Stage 2 addressed AI use documentation, teaching integration, and feedback. Stage 3 emphasized discipline-specific applications and resource dissemination. Over 50 participants from 10 faculties collaborated via Mural and Google Workspace. Smaller sub-groups met biweekly to co-develop resources, while the larger group met monthly for progress updates and AI discussions. Finalized resources were consolidated and shared on a public website at the end of each stage.
Evidence: The website’s resources have been featured in TeachHQ, the university's professional development portal, and informed university's AI assessment reviews. Learning Circle members have facilitated university-wide AI professional learning programs, leveraging these resources to reach over 1,000 staff, highlighting its role in shaping AI integration strategies.
Contribution: The AI Learning Circle generates actionable scholarship on AI-enhanced pedagogy by showcasing staff-driven AI integration. Its interdisciplinary, collaborative design provides a transferable professional learning model for sustainable AI and future disruptive technology integration.
Engagement: An interactive session will explore the Circle’s design and impact, featuring a guided discussion on adapting resources to diverse contexts. Prompts include: “What are the key challenges and opportunities in staff development?” and “How can AI training be made adaptable across disciplines?”
