Abstract

Although more than 1 million patients routinely receive hemodialysis around the world, the potential for dialysis-related complications remains significant. The most important of these relate to fluid and electrolyte changes induced by the dialysis and the clinical effects of these changes. In addition, technical mishaps caused by equipment or consumable failures remain a potential problem. This chapter explores the more significant clinical complications likely to be experienced in a modern dialysis unit.
