Abstract

Breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) is a member of the adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette (ABC) efflux transporter family. Two BCRP proteins dimerize to form a membrane-bound transport system. When positioned in the external membrane of a cell, BCRP can limit the transfer of substrate molecules into cells or across cellular interfaces. BCRP is located at cellular interfaces involved in the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME), where it can influence the pharmacokinetics of many medications and their metabolites.
