Abstract

Effective operation and maintenance (O&M) management is crucial for enhanced building performance and satisfied building occupants. The building design provides stakeholders a strategic opportunity to manage these O&M issues at the earliest stage through relevant design improvements. Integrating multidisciplinary knowledge from existing buildings into decision-making for future projects unlocks the potential for more informed design outcomes. This process is defined as experiential design decision-making in this study. It ensures that the new building design complies with diverse design, construction and O&M requirements in a way that reduces the possible O&M issues as much as possible. As modern buildings become increasingly complex, the knowledge requirements that must be prioritised during building design can also be significantly high. Therefore, it is important to systematically identify these knowledge requirements for effective future design decision-making. The past researchers have steadily identified various knowledge requirements and developed different knowledge frameworks. However, those findings require modifications to accommodate contemporary complexities. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel knowledge framework using a modified set of knowledge requirements for design decision-making by evaluating the existing literature through the scoping review method. The developed framework will be a crucial step towards proposing a systematic approach for experiential design decision-making in future projects.
