Abstract
Slab losses occurring at the winder because of mismatching lengths of break-free paper, and restrictions on splices, can amount to a significant percentage of production. While deckle trim losses have been studied at length, and computerised systems are available to produce optimal arrangements to minimise side-run, there has been little focus on the problem of sequencing jumbos to minimise slab-losses. This paper presents a mathematical programming analysis of some versions of this problem, and demonstrates how a general purpose optimisation package with customised front-end can be applied to generate good solutions.
