note = "Funding Information: BLAST is well known for encouraging junior scientists to present their work, and additionally draws regular attendance from many senior scientists. New attendees credited the non-cliquey atmosphere for making junior scientists feel welcome as colleagues. One way this environment was achieved was by hosting a student–postdoc networking mixer early in the program. The meeting also promotes new scientists through awards that recognize talks and posters with clear, impactful stories. These awards are financially supported by, or in memory of, BLAST colleagues, for example, the Robert Macnab postdoc poster award, Robert Kadner graduate student poster award, and Howard Berg outstanding talk award. Additionally, the BLAST community gives travel awards to trainees in honor of long-time BLAST administrator Peggy O{\textquoteright}Neill, as well as grants from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and Agouron Institute.
