Abstract
This paper describes a generic, multi-layered architecture to implement virtual instrumentation. In particular, it utilizes an object orientated approach to significantly reduce code redundancy. It provides a well structured methodology that facilitates easy incorporation of additional functionalities. The Virtual Instrumentation System (VIS) is organized into a multi-tiered framework that supports system level and application level developments. An additional feature is that the framework is designed to be universal in nature, such that there is only one common API that all developers must conform to in order to build virtual instrumentation systems.
