A Geometrical Picture Book

Research output: Book/ReportBookOtherpeer-review

Abstract

Like most people, you probably glanced through the book before you started reading this introduction. If this is so, you have already discovered what this book is all about, namely pictures, lots and lots of pictures of different kinds of geometrical structures.

Our main goal in writing this book was to provide a source for aesthetically pleasing two- and three-dimensional models of some of the most fundamental incidence geometries students, teachers, and researchers come across in the theories of codes, designs, graphs, groups, statistical designs, and, of course, incidence geometry itself. Examples of such geometries are affine and projective planes and spaces, linear spaces, (symmetric) designs, circle planes, and generalized polygons, to name just a few. Such a sourcebook will prove especially useful in teaching undergraduate and beginning graduate courses dealing with these geometries and in conveying some of the beauty of the objects geometers are obsessed with to the general mathematical and non-mathematical public.
