The design, synthesis and characterisation of a luminescent probe based on the ‘click’ conjugation between a Eu(III) complex and an anthracene moiety, Eu-A, is reported. Eu-A is demonstrated to be able to colourimetrically detect singlet oxygen (1O2) in aqueous media at neutral pH with a clear ‘off-on’ rapid response time of two minutes.
