This work subsequently exhibited in solo exhibition: 'System Preferences', Sutton Gallery, Fitzroy, Vic, Australia, 2 June 2011 to 25 June 2011 The shifts that occur in ideas of painting have often emerged in a curious meeting ground between frustration at the limitations of the medium and what it stands for, and a desire to achieve accomplishments within it: the common narrative of the artist who rebels against painting by coming up with a new solution for it, and in so doing joins the avant-garde, and so receives affirmation (as a part of painting{\textquoteright}s problem). Each of the artists in this exhibition deal with painting either as a direct medium or through painterly sensibilities. The exhibition was a preliminary exploration of the ideas I would further interrogate in subsequent years, as to the relevance of painting in a contemporary context, and the question of what underlies its persistent vitality. ; Love in the Mourning ; Conference date: 15-02-2011 Through 06-03-2011",
