Abstract

We propose to implement a variant of continuous flow intersections on one key intersection of one of the busiest traffic corridors in Melbourne. Unlike regular continuous flow intersections, it does not require the expensive construction of new roads or intersections and uses existing intersections to reroute turning traffic. We simulate the network of the corridor and surrounding areas and study the impact of the new intersection design on public transport and private vehicles. The result suggests that the proposed design improves the traffic condition on all in-links of the intersection, in particular, those in the congested directions. Public transport also benefits from the new design in term of travel speeds and service reliability.
