    Abstract

This article argues why English learning in formal settings in Japan, which follows communicative ideology imported from the West, has not resulted in the most desirable outcome. The discussion, first of all, looks at why the everyday classroom continues to make it hard for learners to improve English proficiency. It then discusses two informal learning models that happened as a result of collaboration and interaction with Australia. In the end, several insights and principles are towards making the acquisition of English more effective for Japanese learners.
