Abstract

Mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) with bone-forming bioactivity has been synthesized. By varying the MBG dosage in simulated body fluid (SBF) while the other evaluation conditions were fixed (MBG/SBF=0.0001~0.002 g/mL), the in vitro bioactivity of MBG was studied in details by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and inductive coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The results show that the rate of hydroxyapatite (HA) formation on the surface of MBG was determined by the MBG dosage in SBF, and the fastest HA formation process was observed at MBG/SBF=0.001 g/mL. Studying the influence of the dosage on the in vitro bioactivity of MBG was important to further understand the structure-bioactivity correlation of this family of biomaterials. Moreover, the choice of an ideal MBG/SBF ratio was practically advantageous for evaluating new MBG materials with better in vitro bioactivity.
