Abstract
Merav Carmeli addresses the feminine element of divinity and its evocation in zoharic narrative in the light of the psychoanalytic tradition and through focusing on a story printed in parashat Noah, Zohar 1:72a-b. Her article explores the feminine as the only gateway into the divine world. The kabbalists described in ‘the main body of the Zohar’ must begin their journey into the divine realm through interaction with the feminine. This interaction can take many forms: it can comprise place, time, feminine knowledge, feminine sexuality, feminine language, and more. In order to clarify the female essence as depicted in the Zohar and the ways in which it can be made present, Carmeli draws on psychoanalytic discourse about femininity spanning Freud, Jung, Derrida, Lacan, Irigaray, Kristeva and Cixous.
