William Cooper and the Struggle for Rights: A Life Story

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

The project will tell the story of the struggle for rights by the Yorta Yorta political leader William Cooper (1860-1941), primarily through his own words and those of his community.

It will raise vital issues about Aboriginal people and the Australian community and its political system. Cooper’s campaigning provides compelling insights into how an Aboriginal leader sought to overcome the exclusion of his people and to win recognition of their rights.

The project will result in a book and a website.
