Project Description

This project illuminates the relationship between two processes essential to the creation of settler societies within the British Empire: the displacement of Indigenous populations and the concurrent propagation of a large and healthy white population to replace them. It breaks new ground by placing these racial imperatives within a single analytic frame and in their proper transnational context. It fills a major gap in historical knowledge by rewriting the history of settler colonialism through the lens of whiteness and will significantly enhance Monash University's existing research strengths and international reputation in the fields of colonial, Indigenous and gender studies.
