Project Description

We aim to answer three questions: 1) What determines the star formation rate in local molecular clouds? 2) Why is star formation inefficient? and 3) Is star formation self-regulated by jets and outflows launched from newborn protostars? The expected outcomes are: - The largest and most realistic computer simulations of the formation of a star cluster anywhere in the world to date - An understanding of the role of dust grains in regulating heating and cooling in star forming regions - Predictions of the efficiency of 'feedback' due to jets and outflows launched from circumstellar discs around newborn stars - State of the art computer algorithms for simulating dusty gas with radiation and magnetic fields
