This project will produce the first cultural history of dance in post 1970s Australia. It will examine the characteristics and history of selected choreographic practices (styles, works, artists, communities) in Australia, in relation to transnational and crosscultural patterns of corporeal exchange. Genealogies of these dance 'figurations' will examine Australian dance not as exclusively aesthetic representations but as detailed embodied histories that reveal the complexity of cultural communication and political change. Resulting conference papers, a video and publications will offer original insights into the embodied experience of migration, postcolonialism, modernity and globalisation in Australian culture understood through dancing.
