    Project Description

    We recently demonstrated the extraordinary power of a new Australian instrument concept called SAMI at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This early prototype demonstrated that it was possible to place 13 hexabundles (special fibre bundles) accurately onto 13 galaxies and obtain spectroscopy at 61 contiguous positions across each galaxy. This provides us with a wealth of information about the gas and stars in each galaxy, including stellar and gas kinematics, and abundance information. SAMI has generated enormous interest across the Australian and international community. Therefore we now propose to turn this concept into a general-user facility with the aim of allowing surveys of thousands of galaxies.
