The Mother Artist

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

I seek a Henry Moore Grant for travel to conduct research in the United States for The Mother Artist, a sole-authored book in progress. Long a taboo subject, if not a career-ender, in recent years a profound cultural shift around motherhood has occurred, with many contemporary artists—as well as writers, poets, filmmakers, and other creative practitioners—now making mothering both the subject and condition of their work. This book examines the rich, if fraught, terrain of motherhood and art, mapping it through artistic practices that coalesce into a field marked by difference, while nonetheless allowing an increasingly vital subject to come into view.

The book comprises five case studies of contemporary artists: Tala Madani, Moyra Davey, Camille Henrot, D and Kate Harding, and Simone Leigh. I seek funding to travel from Australia to the United States to visit
Simone Leigh, the first comprehensive survey exhibition of this acclaimed African American sculptor and US representative to the 2022 Venice Biennale. I plan to view Leigh’s work in person at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and travel to New York City to meet with Leigh in person at her studio in Brooklyn.
