Project Description

We are interested in understanding the basic processes by which the lower-most parts of the continents are recycled into the deep Earth: the mechanisms involved in the removal, how much of the crust can be removed, and the observable consequences such as regional and rapid uplift of the Earth's surface. These processes have not fully been investigated with 3D models before. We will develop computational models to test the hypothesis of an ongoing lithospheric detachment beneath the North Island of New Zealand and an early-stage instability beneath the South Island.
