Project Description
Human “mitochondrial donation” could offer prospective mothers who suffer from mitochondrial diseases the opportunity to have disease-free children. The technique, now legislated in the U.K. and under consideration in the U.S., is a modified form of IVF in which embryos are produced containing chromosomes of their biological parents, but mitochondria (including mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA) from a donor female. While promising, emerging evidence suggests the novel combinations of nuclear and mitochondrial genotype, created following mitochondrial donation, might however lead to unexpected health consequences
