A new, grand theory of the mind is taking hold in theoretical neuroscience: the brain is fundamentally a
hypothesis-tester. This project aims to explore the impact of the theory for philosophy, cognitive science and
mental health. The approach is a novel mix of conceptual analysis and experimental study incorporating
philosophy and cognitive neuroscience. The specific outcomes will be integrated conceptual analyses and
empirical experiments relevant to consciousness, self-awareness and sensory perception, with concrete
applications to schizophrenia, depression, and extending to body image and eating disorders. The result will
be a systematic account of the profound implications of this new theory for our understanding of the human
mind.
